Blog tour: The First of Shadows ( The Riven Realm Series #1) by Deck Matthews

Hey readers!!!

Today I am taking part in a blog tour from the wonderful The Write Reads!!! It’s book 1 in the Riven Realms series – The First of Shadows by Deck Matthews.

The First of Shadows is the first of 3 fast paced fantasy novellas or as the author describes it ‘bite sized epic fantasy’ and it lives up to the description!!

From Goodreads:

How do you kill a shadow?

As a raging storm descends on the Blasted Coast, the crippled young rigger, Caleb Rusk, meets a stranger on the road. Little does he know that the encounter will pull him into a conflict that threatens everything he holds dear—and change the course of his life forever.

Meanwhile, in the Capital of Taralius, a string of inexplicable deaths have captured the attention of the Ember Throne. Second Corporal Avendor Tarcoth is tasked with uncovering the truth behind a danger that could threaten the very fabric of the Realm.

I loved these books. I was lucky enough to receive a copy of all three and I sped through them in ine afternoon. I actually got to the end of the third one and was left hanging and wanted to keep reading.

We are first introduced to Caleb as a hard working young man with a crippled leg. He is bullied about this in the beginning however it doesn’t keep him from beginning a journey that leads him to new and uncertain times. In some ways he is your typical fantasy hero but he is written in such a way that you want to keep travelling on this journey with him.

I also really enjoyed the magic system in these novellas as well. It’s well thought out and I especially enjoyed the familiar aspect of it as I would love one of my own. It’s also not an inexhaustible supply of magic which is great as it means they either have to pace themselves or over do it and risk a burn out.

I highly recommend the Riven Realm series as it is very well written, has great characters and not just the main characters as well as some of your typical fantasy tropes to hook you in. If like me you are a lover of fantasy you will definitely enjoy these books.

I’d love to know what you think!!
